Subject Choices and Assessments

Learners are required to select 7 subjects in total, comprising 4 compulsory subjects and a minimum of 3 elective subjects.

Learners in Grades 10 to 12 follow the CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) guidelines, which include a balanced mix of Continuous Assessment (CASS) and Final Examinations.

  • Grades 10 and 11: Assessments are school-based and adhere to CAPS requirements. Learners’ marks from both CASS and final exams are used to promote them to the next grade.
  • Grade 12: CASS assessments make up 25% of the final NSC mark, while the SACAI-administered final exam makes up 75%.
CASS - Continuous Assessment

CASS contributes significantly to the final grade, offering a clear picture of a learner’s performance over time.

  • Assignments: Typically research-based or project-driven tasks that allow learners to explore subject content in depth.
  • Tests and Quizzes: Regular tests are given to assess understanding and retention of content taught in class.
  • Practical Tasks and Investigations: For subjects like Physical Sciences or EGD, practical tasks and experiments are essential components of the assessment process.
  • Oral Assessments: Subjects like English and Afrikaans include oral presentations or speeches as part of the assessment.
Grade 12 Assessments

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations for Grade 12 are conducted under the auspices of SACAI and contribute the remaining 75% of the learner’s final mark after the 25% contribution from CASS. The final exams cover the entirety of the curriculum and the are administered at SACAI-accredited exam centres.
Note that the Grade 12 final assessments attract additional fees since they are facilitated by an external service provider, over and above the QOA monthly tuition fees quoted. This is estimated around ZAR 13000 once off.

  • Preliminary Examinations (Mock Exams): These are written in the second term of Grade 12 and serve as practice exams, giving learners a sense of the final exam structure.
  • Final SACAI NSC Examinations: These are conducted in the final term of Grade 12. Learners will sit for these standardized national exams, which are externally moderated and marked by SACAI.
